Hardship License Eligibility

A hardship license is a restricted license that is issued to individuals whose regular driver's licenses have been suspended or revoked.

The hardship license is designed to allow individuals facing license suspension or revocation to continue driving under certain conditions, typically for specific purposes such as employment or education.

There are various reasons why someone might be eligible for a hardship license in Florida, including:

  • DUI Conviction: Individuals convicted of a first-time DUI offense may be eligible for a hardship license during a portion of their suspension period.

  • Habitual Traffic Offender (HTO) Status: Individuals designated as habitual traffic offenders may be eligible for a hardship license after a certain period of their suspension.

  • Drug Offenses: Individuals convicted of drug offenses may be eligible for a hardship license, depending on the circumstances.

  • Other Offenses: In certain cases, individuals facing license suspension for other reasons may be eligible for a hardship license.

It's important to note that a hardship license comes with restrictions and is intended to allow individuals to meet essential needs such as work, school, or medical appointments. The specific conditions and eligibility criteria for obtaining a hardship license can vary based on the circumstances of the individual case.

To apply for a hardship license, individuals need to demonstrate that they meet the eligibility criteria and may need to complete specific requirements, such as attending DUI school for DUI-related offenses. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) is typically responsible for handling hardship license applications.
